why did the tigers sign Troy percival to a 2 year 12 million dollar deal? i thought his shoulder was shot. and was urbina really that bad? didnt he have 20+ saves last year? isnt this the kind of signing that won the tigers 50 games 2 years ago?

i really feel like the tigers need new management. from the ground up.

Avatar percival had a great second half, which he used to con a good contract out of detroit.

yea, detroit's pretty stupid. they already had a good closer.

Avatar Damian Miller, a medoiocre 35-yr old catcher, is getting 3 years from Milwaukee.

When these idiotic things come up so frequently for teams like Tampa, Milwaukee and Detroit, it makes me wonder if we're being completely fair to these teams. Sure, maybe they just have dumb GMs. But let's pretend I was a free agent and according to market value I could get X years for X dollars from the Cardinals, Dodgers, Angels, Tigers, Brewers, or Red Sox...it'd be a no-brainer to not even glance at the Tigers and Brewers. It may just be that perennially crappy teams are forced to overpay. Think Detroit woulda got Pudge last year if he had a comparable offer from Frisco or Atlanta?

I'm not saying it's smart or anything (if possible, small budget teams should try to go young and cheap, not 35 years old and sorta cheap), but I'd put money down that these teams are quite aware that they're overpaying by a lot for these guys. Poor are forced to get poorer...

Still doesn't change that Detroit already had a closer, and the Brewers need to get younger instead of 3 years to a 35-yr-old catcher...if you're backed into a corner of having to put out more dollars than those around you, all the more reason to be smart about where those bucks go.

It's probably a combination of questionable management and baseball's messed up system.
