The Spike is Gone

The Golden Spike burnt down last night due to a lightning strike.

"The fire was declared under control by 8 p.m. By the time the scene was cleared by 11:30 p.m., the fire had caused an estimated 200,000 worth of damage, Behrens said" -- Kirksville Daily Express

I was told today that whitnesses said the flames were 4 stories tall at one point.

Isn't that the second Kirksville bar to burn down in less then a year?

well the first one was started by the owner. Who is actually also the mayor of Kirksville. Sounds like she is an awesome person...

A fun sidenote, when the Too Talls fire was deemed arson the Mayor was in Mexico and unavaliable for comment.

first of all, i didnt even know too talls had burnt down. when did that happen?

and are they gonna rebuild the spike? they've been doing comedy there for something like 25+ years, hadnt they? wtf, over?

prolly not, because it had actually closed for a while earlier this year. Then it reopened, but was only open a few nights a week. The owner is the same guy who owns the Dukum.(or at least it used to be, might have changed ownership when it reopened) My guess is that if it is the original owner it was probably a blessing that it burned down.

There's not been much news about it lately, but I think the Mayor was suspected mainly just because she owned the bar and was the last to leave New Years night. Craig Shorten owns the Dukum and does still own the Spike. Yes, it probably was a blessing for him.

dan I think I am correct about this, but I could be wrong... I think she failed a polygraph test about the night and that she has tried to burn it down before..........

You could be right, Kurt, I really can't remember much of the detials. I do know that there are still few ongoing investigations about the fire.
