Adiungo Sucks
Avatar

My current web host, Adiungo, sucks royally.

These guys had my server down for almost 2 days, because they are morons. Every time they would fix something, they would break something else. In fact, I'm not so sure its going to stay up this time either.

So, I found a new host that I'm going to be switching to. I'll let you all know when things are going to happen.

Avatar this is starting to become a normal thing for you... Why not just get a good host this time.

Avatar Just got my new server. The control features on this thing rock. I can have the server call my phone, send me an email or an AOL IM if anything goes wrong... pretty sweet stuff.

Avatar I'm trying to get a good host. But its hard to expect much with a low budget. To really get decent uptime, you need to have a managed dedicated server. Do you have 350 bucks a month for that? What I have is a VPS, which is a virtual private server. Basically, for the most part it is a dedicated server - there just happen to be several others running on the same machine, invisible to me. VPS packages run 20-100 bucks a month. Mine is 30, the one I'm switching to is 35. The next step up is a full dedicated server, which go from 80 bucks a month up to hundreds of dollars a month. VPSs and cheap dedicated servers are both usually unmanaged. This means, they'll only give you support through lvl 1 techs on the phone, or through higher level techs on a ticketing system. Even then, they just get things running and thats it. On a managed dedicated server, which starts at around 350 and goes up to thousands of dollars, they will monitor it to see if it goes down, then work to get it back up. They'll look for attacks on the system, security holes, etc. THAT is what it takes to keep a system up. I just can't afford it.

Avatar what's the management package? Anything commercial?

Avatar What do you mean? Do you mean, what management utilities to managed servers use, or what servers (vps particularly) did I find that offered management?

Avatar whatever "control features" you are talking about. I'm kinda clueless.

Avatar Shared hosting sucks, but sometimes ya just gotta do it.

Jim, if your sites ever do well enough for you to be looking strongly at managed hosting and/or CoLo, I spent a lot of time researching and touring all the st. louis datacenters and talking to references and whatnot back when my company was looking at moving, and can offer lotsa advice. In exchange for a number of beers, of course.
