Jim, I'm looking into buying a domain name and was wondering if you had any recommendations on who to go through for that. It's just for my design portfolio if that makes any difference.

Avatar Well, it really depends. If you are going to host the site somewhere as well, and you aren't going to be opening up a bunch of sites, I would recommend registering your domain name wherever you plan on hosting your site. You may spend an extra 3 bucks on your domain name registration, but it saves you the hassle and/or expense of associating the domain name purchased from one person with the hosting space obtained from another location. If you just want the name, and you'll associate it with something else later, just use GoDaddy.com. Its probaby the biggest/cheapest domain name registration site out there.

How do you plan on hosting it? Or when you asked about getting a domain name, did you assume hosting would be included?

Avatar I second pretty much everything Jimmy said.

If you're gonna register a domain, it's easier to get it through the same place you host your website. I've been extremely happy with my host, http://ritechhosting.net/, for what it's worth. They do domain registrations for 7.50/yr, and their base hosting package is 43.20 a year. I think they'd be a pretty good fit for what you want to do.

I use godaddy as well for my domain, and while I've been happy with their service, their website is atrociously bad. I want to shoot myself every time I have to use it (not often).
